Designed by Sung wook Park for Umbra, Pirouette is a rotating makeup organiser with a modern clear finish and adjustable tiers. Easy to assembly, customise and lock each layer into place and instantly organise your makeup or skincare products.
What was the inspiration behind your design? (ie. time, place, material, other item etc.)
Back in high-school, one of my favourite subjects was Science class, where we were able to experiment with different projects and assignments.
I remembered using this test tube holder / retort stand.
We received the brief and market research for cosmetic organisers and realised how saturated the market was. We wanted to come up with a unique idea that was different in shape but also pleasing to the eye.
Some cosmetics organisers had the adjustable feature, but they were not aesthetically nice to look at. I really enjoyed the mechanic of the retort stand and thought it would be great to use a similar idea with a cosmetic organiser.
What problem (if any) were you trying to solve?
As a modern and minimal design company, we wanted to create something with simple mechanics, but also, with the same and additional features from what's already on the market.
It is also important to keep in mind creating something that is easy to ship, and that to assemble as well.
Were there any challenges along the way? (ie. material, manufacturing, costing, etc.)
When making Pirouette adjustable, so that you can customise where you want each organiser to sit, we originally used screws to fasten each component to the metal rod.
We then decided to switch to a rubber band, that would make it both easy to use for the consumer as well as simplify the manufacturing process, that wouldn't scratch the rod. We looked at different types of mechanics that was easy to adjust, and understand while not scratching the rod.
While we were researching we found a shower caddy that is easy to adjust using a rubber band so we adapted that mechanic into Pirouette. It ended up looking even nicer and cleaner than the screws and works really well. Eliminate the exposure of the hardware for a clean and seamless look.
What is your favourite part about the product?
My favourite part about Pirouette Organiser is that it is adjustable, while being easy to use, and do it yourself. It is customisable for your needs and your makeup.
I also think the Acrylic/clear finish is perfect, making it easy to see your products.
What makes this product different/unique/better compared to everything else on the market?
Pirouette has both a minimal design while also providing lots of room for storage. Many of the other organisers have the exact same look to them, so it was most important to us to create something different.
